Peace and Quiet

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature – trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.

-Mother Teresa

In a world of such noisiness, it is crazy hard to find a teeny bit of peace and quiet. It’s so hard that you have to intentionally hunt for it. We have noise coming from all directions ALL THE TIME! My family and I are all part of the noise, too, especially my teenagers. They have their phones out, ipads, video games, T.V…..geez! I’m surprised their eyes haven’t turned square or they haven’t grown a charger for a tail. Lately, they have gotten into the habit of having headphones on listening to music while they are doing their chores, riding in the car, walking the dog or just hanging around the house. So….I guess what I’m trying to say is that they have their headphones on all the time. I kind of get it! I would like to put on headphones and drown out the world, too! Maybe I should try that sometime. I’m sure the family would love it (I know you feel the sarcasm!). The worst is when I have been talking to them for 10 minutes and then….silence. So, I keep talking….silence again. Then, I turn around, and I see that they have their headphones on and they didn’t hear a word that I said! And, what I said mattered! It was important…well, to me anyway. And, if you are like me, I really don’t like repeating myself all the time, so I get all irritated. Now, my kids are looking at me with this confused expression on their face while I’m yelling at them in silence because they have their headphones on!! I must look insane waving my arms everywhere while Coldplay accompanies me as the background music!

Then I got to thinking, if I’m feeling so frustrated with the noise that keeps my children from hearing me, I bet the Lord feels the same way about us? How can He really have deep connection, conversation and intimacy with us if we always surround ourselves with noise. We may not have our headphones on, but we are so distracted and busy that it would be difficult if the Lord yelled our names audibly…let alone His faint whispers to our hearts. And, when we can’t hear the Lord guide us, we get all confused and start trusting ourselves in our own decisions instead of the Him. And, that just becomes a one big sticky mess! You see, if we are distracted by glittery lights, sounds that entertain us, and pictures that satisfy our eyes then we don’t really have time to reflect on our Heavenly Father. And, if we don’t have time to do that, then we are in danger of losing our true identity because that is only found in Christ. What a terrible shame that would be! But, Satan would be so pleased. If you are too busy pushing buttons and playing mindless games, then you are not going to be any kind of threat to him by building the Lord’s Kingdom. It’s kind of like putting on a movie for your kids when you’re busy. While they are drooling at the screen, you can get your work done. Well, Satan is putting on the movie!

If you are finding that you are too distracted by all the noise around you, there is a really great way to stop it….push the off button. Don’t allow Satan to take away your precious quiet time with the Lord, and your quality time with your family. Remember those things called family dinners, board games, campfires, puzzles?? Those things still exist! That is where you are able to delight in one another, and you can have true relationship with Him.

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10
